A British woman is in hospital in Bali and may lose a limb after a horrific accident in which she was run over by a truck.
Beautician Charlene Morrissey was riding her scooter on the Indonesian island on July 21 when she ended up in the road after a collision with a truck, causing the huge vehicle to run over her arm.
Charlene, from Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she received multiple blood transfusions and underwent multiple operations. However, the business owner is yet to undergo further operations as medics battle to save her arm.
As things stand, Charlene’s insurance company has refused to pay out for the accident and her family now have hospital bills of £50,000. A GoFundMe has been set up by friends of the family in a desperate bid to bring her home.
A statement on the online fundraiser reads: “We are contacting you on behalf of Charlene and her family in the hope of raising urgent funds to help cover Charlene’s mounting medical costs following a very serious road traffic accident in Bali. The overriding concern now is to keep the level of infection to a minimum and allow Charlene to undergo a critical operation which could save her arm, although the outcomes remain uncertain.

“The most recent procedure Charlene underwent involved a massive skin graft, but the surgeons are not confident that it was successful as large amounts of necrotic skin had to be removed from the elbow down. The risk of finger amputation is still high at this stage and the surgeon cannot perform the critical operation with her fingers in their current state.”
Doctors have decided to wait a week before operating on Charlene again in the hope that her fingers can be saved, the Daily Record reports. She is then expected to undergo pedicle flap surgery – a crucial procedure in which Charlene’s arm and hand are attached to her abdomen in a bid to regrow skin and prevent amputation.
This means she is expected to remain in hospital in Bali for another four weeks.

The statement continued: “This complex operation will require Charlene to remain in hospital in Bali for at least another four weeks, with costs continuing to rise every day. In just a few days since the accident, her family have already received medical bills of over £50,000 and sadly Charlene’s insurance company has refused to cover the costs.
“Charlene is racing against the clock to get these urgent procedures done and her family is left with mounting medical bills.
“It is so important to us to give Charlene the best chance of recovery and bring her home to her loved ones. Your support will make a huge difference in her journey to recovery.”
We hope that the fundraiser will cover the costs of Charlene’s medical procedures, her care and treatment and her transportation back to Scotland.
Meanwhile, Charlene’s sister, Alana Crofton, has traveled to Bali with their mother so the couple can be with her.
Alana wrote on Facebook: “I felt it was right to share an update on my sister Charlene who was involved in a terrible accident over the weekend. The most important thing is that she is stable.
“She was riding her scooter when she unfortunately fell off at high speed and collided with another vehicle. My sister’s injuries were extremely serious and she can share the extent of these injuries at a later date if she wishes, I just don’t want any rumours to go around.
“She still has a long road ahead of her in terms of surgeries and recovery. My family and I are grateful to the medical team who cared for her and the team who got to her in time. If it had been a few minutes later, this could have been a much heavier burden to write.
“We really appreciate the well wishes we have received from friends and family so far, it means a lot. My mother and I are now travelling to Bali to be with Charlene and help in any way we can.
“Unfortunately, her medical expenses are not covered by her insurance company. We want to know what the next steps are and get Charlene home safely to her family where she can begin her recovery.”
