Jetty’s Ending Explained: Who Killed Amy?

In the finale, it was revealed that Amy had been murdered, but not in the way you might have expected.

She died after she was hit by a car that Ember was driving while under the influence of drugs which Mack gave her as part of her birthday celebration.

In order to ‘protect’ Ember, Mack had convinced Arj (Matthew McNulty), who was also under the influence when he was in the car with them, that he was responsible, a lie he accepted as the truth.

Amy’s body was then buried in the cabin and remained there for 17 years until renovations began, forcing Arj to exhume her remains and set fire to the property to hide any evidence.

But when Riz arrived on the scene, her private investigator discovered a bone fragment in the rubble. Arj took drastic measures, but later Ember discovered his crimes.

“I had made my predictions about who I thought it would be, and of course the way something is told nails you down to someone,” Ruby Stokes, who plays Ember’s daughter Hannah, said in an interview with RadioTimes.com. “But no, I had absolutely no idea that it was Arj or Ember who had done any of those things.

“I do like that it was the person you’re rooting for who ended up doing the bad thing. It’s interesting that Arj is presented as the nice guy… when in the end he did the bad thing. I liked that and the way it went.”

Archie Renaux, who plays Ember’s younger colleague Hitch, joked that he “knew everything” when he first read the scripts, before adding: “I had no idea, I really had no idea.”

He added: “What I love about this is the exploration of how our memory, our brain, can misremember things to protect us and to cope with trauma or a bad event. I just love how that’s done.”

Renaux went on to say that Arj’s close relationships with both Ember and Mack make the big reveal “even more heartbreaking.”

“It would have been a lot better for Ember if it was just a mysterious killer who did this for some other gain,” he added.

“And especially that Ember herself put all that time, effort and emotion into finding out what happened, only to end up on the path of returning to herself.

“It does make it more heartbreaking.”

When asked if Ember could carry that secret with her for the rest of her life, Renaux told RadioTimes.com: “I don’t know. It’s one of those things you would do if you were in that situation. You don’t really know what you would do.

“I think her mom might say something to her. But because it’s just her and Caitlin who have this secret… there’s no repercussions. If she tells someone else, then it’s out there and you don’t really have control over where it goes.”

Stokes went on to say that people like to imagine what they would do in a given situation, but you never really know until you’re in it.

“It’s a game for the individual,” she added. “I’m not sure anyone can tell anyone else how to deal with something like that.”
