How to Get Your Peace Lily to Bloom Again and Again All Year RoundHow to Get Your Peace Lily to Bloom Again and Again All Year Round Peace lily houseplants often come with beautiful white blooms, but these blooms tend to wither after purchase. Here are some tips from Petar Ivanov, a garden and plant expert at Fantastic Gardener, on how to get your peace lily to bloom again and again all year round: Fertilize with Kitchen Scraps * Banana peels: Rich in potassium, which stimulates flowering. * Eggshells: Contain calcium, which promotes plant growth. * Coffee grounds: Add nitrogen and phosphorus for healthy growth. Note: Use these fertilizers only during the active growing season (spring and summer) and once a month. Other Tips * Avoid fertilizing in the winter when the plant is dormant. * Rotate different types of kitchen scraps to provide a variety of nutrients. * Consider using homemade fertilizers as they are milder than commercial fertilizers and can be applied more liberally.
A peace lily houseplant is often adorned with beautiful white inflorescences when purchased in a supermarket or garden center. However, after you bring it home, the flowers inevitably turn brown and wither, leaving only green foliage.
Petar Ivanov, garden and plant expert at Fantastic Gardener, has shared some tips on how to get your peace lily to bloom again and again all year round, the Express reports.
“Like any other plant, a peace lily can benefit from a little boost in flowering,” Petar says.
He noted that one of the most common problems with this houseplant is that the plant does not flower.
Petar suggested, “Give him banana peels as fertilizer; this is the best kitchen waste to make a peace lily flourish.”
However, he also mentioned that other kitchen scraps can be just as effective. “There are other (kitchen scraps) that you can substitute (banana) with. The key is that the ingredient is high in potassium, which is the nutrient that stimulates flowering.
“Eggshells are an excellent substitute for banana peel water because they enrich the plant’s soil with calcium, an essential nutrient for plant growth.”
He continues: “You can also add coffee grounds to it. They contain nitrogen and phosphorus, which are also good for healthy plant growth.”
However, he cautioned that it takes longer to use coffee grounds, as ideally they should be added to the compost first so they can break down before being added to the plant’s soil.
Gardening expert Petar shares some valuable tips on using kitchen scraps like banana peels, eggshells, and coffee grounds to fertilize peace lilies, but he emphasizes that this should only be done during their active growing season in spring and summer. “Do it once a month,” Petar advises, noting that the optimal period for growth is March through August.
He also suggests rotating between different types of kitchen scraps to provide the plant with a variety of nutrients. “Consider rotating the kitchen scraps as well so that the peace lily can get each of the beneficial nutrients,” he says.
Petar points out that homemade fertilizers are generally milder than commercial fertilizers, allowing them to be applied more liberally. However, he cautions that these natural fertilizers are not effective year-round; they are not useful in the winter, when the peace lily enters a dormant phase.
According to Petar, the spoon plant “needs rest” during the colder months.
