Commercial drivers faced 1,000 violations of the Highway Traffic Act, while noncommercial drivers accounted for the remaining tickets. The violations ranged from speeding, tailgating, and improper lane changes to loose cargo and defective equipment on commercial vehicles. The campaign highlighted the risks associated with unsafe driving practices, as nearly 500 collisions involving commercial vehicles on OPP-patrolled roads have resulted in fatalities or injuries in the past year. The OPP emphasized that the majority of collisions are preventable through responsible driving practices. Operation Safe Driver Week, an annual initiative of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, serves as a reminder to motorists that safety should be prioritized on the roads.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued more than 8,100 traffic tickets during Operation Safe Driver Week as a result of unsafe acts and behaviours by both private and commercial drivers.

Commercial drivers were charged with more than 1,000 violations of the Highway Traffic Act. Noncommercial drivers were penalized for the remainder of the violations.

From speeding, following too closely and unsafe lane changes to loose cargo and defective commercial vehicle equipment, the wide range of violations underscores the many risks that arise when drivers fail to share the road safely in and around large commercial vehicles.

Through July 2024, nearly 500 of the more than 4,000 collisions involving commercial vehicles on OPP-patrolled roads have resulted in deaths and/or injuries.

Motorists are reminded that the vast majority of collisions could be prevented if every driver made a commitment to use our roads safely all year round.

Operation Safe Driver Week is an annual campaign created by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. This year’s campaign runs from July 7 to July 14, 2024.
