The MGM+ horror series is all about mystery, so it only makes sense that we’ve compiled a list of the best theories about the show’s possible future.

Symbols, strange talismans and elusive creatures have haunted us for years. Season 3 of From will only increase the speculation.

We have a lot of questions about the origins of the Monsters in From, what exactly the town is, and whether the characters will ever escape it entirely (we’re looking at you, Tabitha).

One thing is for sure: fans have a keen eye. There’s a lot of information and hints to sift through, but we have our favorite theories. Season 2 spoilers and a lot of far-reaching to follow.

You must ‘die’ to escape the city

Tabitha in Season 2.

In the season 2 finale, Tabitha was pushed off the lighthouse by the Boy in White. It should have killed her, but instead she woke up in St. Anthony Hospital.

The idea that you must somehow die to escape the city has been suggested before. Boyd’s wife’s death was based on her belief that everyone had to die to “wake up.”

It’s possible that Tabitha didn’t escape, and that this is a trick; a pocket dimension within the city, or some other strange answer. However, if she really is outside of it, then the idea that death is a path to liberation is somewhat tenable.

It’s probably not as simple as death equals escape. Maybe it has to be in certain places and with specific means.

It could also be that “good” beings are meant to be involved. The Boy in White seems to help people, not hinder them. Perhaps certain supernatural forces are not evil and hold the key to salvation.

Furthermore, Tabitha may have jumped from one terrifying city straight into another. A sign on the walls indicates that she is on Level 2 of the hospital. But perhaps she has just reached the second layer of whatever supernatural onion we are.

The city used to be a place of worship

An image of a rune in From, with red markings outlining the assigned rune.

The talismans we have seen have runes on them, so while there is nothing to explain how or why the runes were created, we can use the symbols to decipher possible clues.

Redditor wrote about one specific talisman: “The middle part is the Ingwaz rune, which is connected to the god Freyr, who is associated with fertility, prosperity, and a good harvest.

“Connected to the Ingwaz rune, at the top and bottom, are what appear to be the upper halves of stick figures, with their arms raised. I think that’s exactly what they are: they have their arms raised in worship. They’re worshipping Freyr.

“Around the middle section we have eight symbols that look like trees (or at least halves of trees) and that reminded me of the city itself (also surrounded by trees). I saw the talisman as an indication that the city used to be a place of worship.”

They admitted that the Ingwaz rune doesn’t always correlate with Freyr, so it’s a guess. It’s a compelling guess, though.

The beings are manifestations

The laughing creature in From.

Another theory is that the creatures are expressions of fears, guilt, and other feelings unique to each character.

Of characters have significant baggage. Something drove them to the city. Whether they were running, looking for a fresh start, or carrying secrets, fate brought them there.

The creatures disguise themselves as humans before revealing their true forms as they hunt. The series hasn’t explained what they are exactly, but the horror genre is home to allegory and metaphor.

So, the creatures could represent challenges or fears in the characters’ lives. For example, one viewer suggested, “Tian-Chen’s fear of dementia after watching her husband decline could manifest as the road just going in circles with no way to get back home.”

A version of this theory was put forward in season 2 by Sara, who wonders if the fears of those who die come back to haunt the living. The reason for this is that her brother, Nathan, was terrified of cicadas before she (accidentally) killed him – see, Fromville is plagued by cicadas in the second chapter.

But what about the laughing creatures? Well, it’s a bit of a stretch, but some think they’re a manifestation of Victor’s childhood fear of ventriloquist dolls. This would explain why he loses it when he and Tabitha encounter the doll in the caves.

As one Redditor said, “There was a particular moment with the ventriloquist dummy where I noticed how much it looked like the creatures, especially Smiley. And in one scene, Victor was clearly terrified of the dummy.

“My theory is that Victor was afraid of the doll as a child and his fear created the creatures, just like in other cases where fears became reality in the city.”

This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (for example, why does everyone have to deal with the endless road for (Bing-Qian’s death?), but it doesn’t have to.

The city is a prison for demons

Jade in Van.

While the characters in From are eager to escape, we bet the monsters would rather find bigger prey.

The humans and their hunters are trapped together, and there is only so much food. The city is naturally replenished with new humans, but if given the chance, the creatures might prefer to be outside.

Since the voices Sara heard in her head said they wanted to escape, there could be an outside force, sentient or natural, that created the city to trap the creatures, good and evil. This also makes it plausible that people are treated like cattle.

If an entity is purposefully pushing characters into town instead of supernatural events attracting them, it will be a surprise with a Cabin in the Woods-esque vibe.

Water will be an important element in Van

The boy in white in From.

The writers have used water as a major part of certain storylines from the beginning. As one Reddit user noted, water and things related to it keep coming back:

  • Elgin dreams he is drowned by the ‘witch’
  • Boyd wants a boat and still has the key to the boat
  • We hear boat horns throughout the series
  • There is a lighthouse
  • The boy in white is wearing what appears to be sailing gear
  • Tabitha escapes after falling from the lighthouse
  • When Tabitha opens the curtains, sailboats and a submerged car can be seen in the distance

Whether the elementary repetition in this From theory will lead to anything remains to be seen, but it is a thread worth pulling on.
