However, the hospital director, Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, remained hopeful for an amicable resolution. Mishra suggested that the incident may have stemmed from the heavy workload and staff shortages. The clash between the GPs and nursing staff erupted on Monday evening following an altercation between a doctor and a nursing assistant while treating a patient. The conflict escalated rapidly, involving more staff members and gaining attention in local newspapers on Tuesday. The GPs accused the nursing staff of spreading falsehoods and damaging the hospital’s reputation, leading to protests outside the hospital director’s office. They demanded an apology and retraction of false statements made to the media by the nurses’ association. In response, the nursing staff also protested against the GPs’ actions. During a meeting held by a committee formed to address the issue, the GPs announced a work strike from Wednesday morning, stating that they would only provide emergency services and abstain from general duties.

Wink: Around 250 general practitioners working at the SCB Medical College and Hospital called for an indefinite strike from Wednesday, demanding action against the nursing staff who allegedly assaulted them. However, hospital director Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra hoped that the issue would be resolved amicably. Mishra said that the huge workload and staff shortage could be the reason behind the recent clash between the general practitioners and the nursing staff. The clash between the general practitioners and the nursing staff started on Monday evening after a quarrel broke out between a doctor and a nursing assistant while treating a patient in the medical ward of the hospital. Soon, other doctors and nurses joined the fray and what initially seemed like a minor issue was blown out of proportion on Tuesday morning when reports about the incident appeared in several local newspapers. Alleging that the nursing staff was spreading lies and damaging the reputation of the hospital and the doctors in the media, the general practitioners protested outside the office of the hospital director. They demanded that the nurses’ association apologize and stop making false statements to the media.

The move by the GPs was also protested by the nursing staff. When the issue was further escalated during a meeting with the hospital committee formed to resolve the confusion, the GPs announced a work strike from Wednesday morning. “We will provide only emergency services and boycott general duties,” said Bibhas Kumar, secretary of the GPs.
