MARGAO: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Salcete on Tuesday, causing extensive damage to properties and injuring a 92-year-old woman. Four houses were severely damaged and a protective wall collapsed, hitting two ground-floor apartments at Nagesh Garden.

According to Gil Souza, Station Fire Officer (FSO) Margao, a wall of a mud house collapsed at Khareband, injuring 92-year-old Bruzence Pereira. She was immediately rushed to South Goa District Hospital for treatment. The estimated loss from this incident is around Rs 50,000.

The collapse of the protective wall near Nagesh Garden, Borda, caused damage to two ground floor apartments. In addition, a tree fell on a house near the children’s park in Amrut Nagar, Gogol. Firefighters rushed to the spot to remove the tree and evacuate the area.

In another incident, a tree fell on a house in Navelim, causing damage, although the estimated loss is unknown. Firefighters quickly cleared the fallen tree, making the area safe.

A tree fell on a house near Raj Mowers in Sao Jose Areal and firefighters also cleared a tree that had fallen on the road near Costa Factory in Aquem and another tree that had leaned on a compound wall and road near the old TVS showroom in Borda. The estimated loss from these incidents is around Rs 5,000.

Despite the extensive damage to five homes by uprooted trees during the heavy rain and wind, no other injuries were reported. The downpour disrupted normal life in Salcete, causing flooding and roadblocks due to fallen trees.
