Nationwide is giving new building society members a free boost of £220 this year, but this is only for a select group.

The high street building society is giving members with a FlexStudent bank account £100 cashback and a year’s supply of £120 Just Eat vouchers. The cash boosts are available from today (16 July). The bank account is available to students and offers an interest-free, fee-free overdraft of up to £3,000. The FlexStudent account also has no fees for overseas purchases and cash withdrawals.

To get the cash boost, you need to apply for a FlexStudent account from 16 July and deposit £500 by 13 December 2024 – this could be your first student loan payment. Once you’ve deposited the £500, you’ll receive the £100 cashback payment within 14 days. From the moment you open the account, students will receive a £10 Just Each voucher every month for the first year.

Tom Riley, Director of Retail Products at Nationwide Building Society, said: “We believe your student account should help you get the most out of your time at university and we hope our cashback offer and Just Eat partnership will make their first year that little bit easier. Combined with the interest-free, fee-free overdraft facility and commission-free overseas use, we’re doing all we can to make student life as simple and enjoyable as possible.”

To qualify for the student account, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have been a resident of the United Kingdom for three years or more
  • Don’t have another student account (if you do, you can transfer it to Nationwide)
  • Have an unconditional offer or a conditional place on a full-time UCAS course of at least two years duration
  • Be starting your degree programme at a UK institution within five months or less, or be following your degree programme for less than twelve months.

Nationwide isn’t the only high street bank tempting students with perks. Santander has today launched the chance for 20 students to win £27,750 – the full cost of their university tuition fees. A further 30 students can also win a year’s tuition of £9,250. In addition, all new Santander Edge Student current account holders will receive a free four-year Santander 16-25 Railcard card.

Andrea Melville, Director of Current Accounts, Savings and Business Banking at Santander, said: “We all know that every penny counts when it comes to student finances. Whether it’s paying rent, groceries, travel or a night out, it all adds up – and with the new academic term just around the corner, we wanted to give our student customers a little help. That’s why our student account continues to offer the free railcard, making travel easier on the wallet, and for a limited time we’re giving students the chance to win back their tuition fees.”
