The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended the scene and removed the device for safe disposal.” Resident Testimony One resident reported that 20 homes were inaccessible due to the police cordon. They stated that residents were accessing their homes through neighbors’ gardens and leaving their cars elsewhere. Another resident suggested that the grenade may have been unearthed from a Cornish wall in a garden belonging to a former military nurses’ residence. Conclusion The suspected grenade found in St Columb was safely removed by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team. Residents in the area were advised to remain indoors while the incident was handled. The police are investigating the matter further.

Last night, Monday 15th July, a suspected grenade was found in a garden in Cornwall. A witness said police cordoned off around 20 houses in St Columb after the explosive was found.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the scene at West Park at 8.05pm. The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team also attended and the device was safely removed.

Residents in the area were told to stay in their homes while the incident was dealt with. There were six homes within the police cordon and the entire street was closed off.

One person told Cornwall Live: “A total of 20 houses that are completely inaccessible to local residents on this street, they come through their neighbours’ gardens and have to leave their cars elsewhere.”

A second added: “A neighbour dug up an old Cornish wall in their back garden, these houses have been here since before WW2. They belonged to the military nurses who cared for casualties and relatives.”
