United Nations, July 16 (PTI) India has made a significant contribution to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals through its efforts, said Aayog Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI.

Bery made these remarks on Monday. He is representing India at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is taking place at the UN headquarters from July 8 to 17, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council.

The theme is ‘Strengthening the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: effectively delivering sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions’.

“Through its efforts, India has made a significant contribution to progress on these SDGs and has been successful through successful delivery of physical and digital infrastructure at scale, targeted national social safety net programmes with digital delivery to minimise fraud, enhanced women agencies, focus on programme delivery in least developed administrative jurisdictions and strengthened local and national response to natural and man-made disasters,” Bery said here.

He said all this has been achieved in a participatory, democratic framework with orderly transfers of power at the Indian state level and at the Centre, following the recently concluded national elections.

The HLPF is undertaking a comprehensive review of Sustainable Goal 1 to end poverty in all its forms everywhere; Goal 2 to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; and Goal 13 to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Goal 16 is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels; and Goal 17 is to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

Speaking at India’s National Declaration, Bery emphasised India’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Speaking on the multidimensional poverty index, he said India is on track to achieve target 1.2, which is to reduce by at least half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions as per regional definitions, well ahead of the 2030 deadline, “as about 135 million Indians escaped multidimensional poverty in the five years between 2015-16 and 2019-21.”

He said this has been made possible by integrating social safety nets, infrastructure development and multiple financial inclusion programmes.

He noted that currently over 500 million Indians benefit from cashless health insurance.

India has guaranteed free food supplies to over 800 million citizens during the pandemic and in the years since, making it the largest food security programme in the world.

He added that the most crucial SDG, on which “the success of our efforts depends”, remains SDG 17 and that India has placed emphasis on strengthening partnerships to facilitate access to adequate financing, technology and capacity building for the global South.

On climate action, he said India has invested heavily in renewable energy and decarbonisation despite being one of the countries with the lowest per capita emissions.
