European Union Artificial Intelligence Act: Key DatesEuropean Union Artificial Intelligence Act: Key Dates The European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (the “Act”), the world’s first comprehensive set of rules for artificial intelligence, will come into effect on the following key dates: * August 2, 2024: The Act enters into force. * August 2, 2026: Most provisions of the Act become applicable. * February 2, 2025: Ban on AI systems that pose an unacceptable risk takes effect. * August 2, 2027: Obligations for high-risk systems apply. The Act is directly applicable in all EU Member States without the need for additional national legislation.

As previously discussed, in March the European Parliament approved the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (the “Act”), creating the world’s first comprehensive set of rules for artificial intelligence. On 12 July 2024, the Act was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, marking the final step in the EU’s legislative process.

The law will enter into force on 2 August 2024, with most provisions applying from August 2, 2026The ban on AI systems that pose an unacceptable risk will come into effect on February 2, 2025and the obligations for high-risk systems will apply from August 2, 2027.

This Regulation shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States, without the need for additional national legislation.
