A survey by LocalCircles found that seven in ten (68%) users of app-based food delivery platforms regularly or sometimes encounter hidden fees (other than taxes) associated with orders that are not disclosed up front.

The survey received 32,000 responses from food delivery app users across 249 districts of the country. While 61% of the respondents were male, 39% of the respondents were female. A total of 48% of the respondents were from Tier 1, 31% were from Tier 2 and 21% of the respondents were from Tier 3, 4 and rural districts.

‘32% VERY OFTEN EXPERIENCE HIDDEN COSTS’

The survey asked the following question: “How often have you experienced app-based food delivery platforms adding hidden fees (other than taxes) to orders that are not disclosed up front but are charged once the transaction is completed?”

The query received 10,844 responses, of which 32% indicated “very often,” 36% indicated “sometimes,” and 16% indicated “rarely.” Additionally, 16% of respondents indicated they had “never” experienced hidden fees. In summary, 68% of surveyed users of app-based food delivery platforms say they have often or sometimes experienced hidden fees (other than taxes) associated with orders that are not disclosed up front but are collected once the transaction is complete.

‘69% EXPERIENCE BAIT & SWITCH’

The survey asked the following question: “How often have you experienced with app-based food delivery platforms that the delivery time you are shown before placing the order is significantly shorter than the actual time it takes for the delivery person to arrive at your location (bait and switch approach)?”

The question received 10,859 responses, with 21% of respondents indicating they had experienced a delivery delay “very often”; 48% of consumers indicated “sometimes” and 21% indicated “rarely”. Only 5% of respondents indicated they had “never” experienced a delivery delay and 5% of respondents did not provide a clear answer.

In summary, 69% of surveyed users of app-based meal delivery platforms indicate that they have regularly encountered bait and switch practices.

‘46% EXPERIENCE WITH BASKET SNEAKING’

The survey then asked the following question: “How many times have you experienced an app-based food delivery platform adding a subscription/service or product to your cart without your consent (basket sneaking approach)?”

This question received 10,858 responses, of which 17% indicated they had experienced basket stealing approaches “very often,” 29% of respondents indicated “sometimes,” and 25% indicated they had experienced them “rarely.” Additionally, 17% of respondents indicated they had “never” experienced something like this, and 12% of respondents did not provide a clear answer.

In summary, 46% of surveyed users of app-based meal delivery platforms indicate that they have regularly experienced shopping basket theft.
