Accra, Ghana The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival (Panafest) Foundation have officially launched the celebration of Emancipation Day 2024 in Accra, Ghana. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the formal abolition of slavery in the British Empire on August 1, 1834. In many countries around the world, including Ghana, it is observed as a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration of the resilience and liberation of the African diaspora. The celebration of Emancipation Day 2024 in Ghana will be held under the theme “Emancipation: Our Heritage, Our Future.” The launch event was attended by dignitaries, cultural leaders, and stakeholders from various industries. Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Awal Mohammed, emphasized the importance of Emancipation Day in African history. He called for continued collaboration between Ghana and other African nations to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the diaspora. “Emancipation Day is not just a commemoration of the end of slavery, but a celebration of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of our ancestors,” said Dr. Mohammed. “It is a day for us to reconnect with our roots and reaffirm our commitment to building a better future for ourselves and generations to come.” The GTA Chief Executive Officer, Akwasi Agyeman, outlined the planned activities for Emancipation Day 2024, which will include: * A grand durbar of chiefs and cultural groups * A historical reenactment of the slave trade * Traditional drumming and dance performances * Lectures and workshops on African history and culture * A tribute to African heroes and heroines * A youth empowerment symposium * A concert featuring renowned African musicians “We are expecting a large number of visitors from across the globe to join us in Accra for Emancipation Day 2024,” said Agyeman. “This event will be a testament to the power of tourism to connect people, build bridges, and promote understanding.” The Panafest Foundation Chairman, Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, commended the GTA for its commitment to promoting African history and culture through tourism.
