Desperate to protect her son, she started screaming and tried to stop them. However, the driver ignored her and struck her with the car as it sped away. Stakely was pronounced dead at the hospital due to fatal head injuries. The boy was reportedly unharmed. The thieves abandoned the Honda MPV a short distance away and remain at large. Columbus police are actively searching for two suspects. Stakely worked as a speech therapist and waitress. Her colleagues at the Canal Winchester Local Schools District, where she worked, described her as a “devoted mother” and a compassionate therapist who made a positive impact on the lives of many children. “Alexa was passionate about children and speech therapy,” the district’s statement read. “She was smart and compassionate, and she cared deeply about helping children develop their communication skills.” The tragedy has left Stakely’s family and community devastated. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support her son and cover expenses related to her death.

A 29-year-old Ohio mother has died after desperately trying to prevent thieves from fleeing with her son in her car.

Alexa Stakely suffered fatal head injuries when she was struck by her own vehicle. Local police said she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The thieves left the Honda MPV a short distance away and fled past Mrs Stakely, who lay injured in the road.

Her six-year-old son was believed to have been unharmed in the incident.

Ms Stakely, a single mother, worked as a speech therapist and waitress. The tragedy occurred at 1:30 a.m. Thursday after she had finished a shift at a restaurant and was picking up her son from a babysitter.

Once the boy was safely in the car, she left the Honda running and drove back to the babysitter’s house to get her bags.

But when she walked back to the car, she saw that thieves were trying to flee with it. Mrs. Stakely started screaming and tried to stop the car from leaving.

During this movement she was hit when the driver drove away and did not stop.

Columbus police say two suspects remain at large.

The Canal Winchester Local Schools District, where she worked, said in a statement that she was a “devoted mother.”

“Alexa was passionate about children and speech therapy,” the tribute read.

“She was smart and compassionate, and she cared deeply about helping children develop their communication skills.

“Ms. Stakely has made a difference in the lives of the students and their families she has worked with. She will be missed by so many people in our community and beyond.”
