City Closes Tent Encampment Ahead of DNCCity Closes Tent Encampment Ahead of DNC Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) has announced the permanent closure of a tent encampment near Roosevelt Road and the Dan Ryan Expressway on July 17. The camp, currently housing approximately 30 unhoused individuals, will be cleared to ensure safety and provide access to shelter for its residents. According to DFSS Commissioner Brandie Knazze, the closure is not related to any requests from the U.S. Secret Service or the Democratic National Committee. However, she noted that she did not want to be caught off guard by last-minute requests prior to the event. Camp residents were notified of the closure a month in advance and have been offered shelter at a city-run facility in the Loop. The shelter will remain open through August 31, a week after the DNC, with the goal of connecting tenants to permanent housing. “We offer housing to everyone who has moved,” Knazze stated. The closure of the tent encampment is part of a broader effort by the city to address homelessness and provide support for those in need.

A tent encampment near Roosevelt Road and the Dan Ryan Expressway will be permanently closed next week, about a month before the Democratic National Convention.

The camp is currently home to approximately 30 people who do not have permanent housing.

According to Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services, the camp will close permanently on July 17.

“This is about safety, about everyone having a right to a home and about people being safe,” said DFSS Commissioner Brandie Knazze.

Knazze said no one from the U.S. Secret Service or the Democratic National Committee had requested removal, but she didn’t want to receive last-minute requests in the days leading up to the event.

According to Knazze, the camp’s residents were notified a month before the closure and nearly all of the residents were moved to a city-run shelter in the Loop.

The shelter will be funded through August 31, a week after the DNC. After that, Knazze’s goal is to connect tenants with permanent housing.

“We offer housing to everyone who has moved,” she said.
