According to reports from WSB-Atlanta, the driver was traveling southbound on I-75 near mile marker 351 when a black bear suddenly emerged from the roadside and ran across the lanes. Despite the driver’s attempt to avoid it, the bear crashed into the side of the vehicle. The impact was severe, causing extensive damage to the car. The front end was crumpled, the windshield shattered, and one of the tires was ripped off. The Uber driver, whose name has not been released, was not seriously injured but was shaken up by the ordeal. Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene and found the bear deceased alongside the road. They closed the southbound lanes of I-75 for several hours to clean up the debris and remove the bear’s remains. Bear collisions are becoming increasingly common in Georgia and other parts of the country. As human populations expand into bear habitats, the risk of encounters and collisions increases. In 2021 alone, there were over 300 reported bear collisions in Georgia. Drivers are advised to exercise caution when driving in areas known for bear activity. Slow down, stay alert, and be aware of your surroundings. If you encounter a bear on the road, do not approach or attempt to feed it. Call 911 immediately.
