Her condition deteriorated on her follow-up visit on April 3, with critically low sodium levels. Despite this, the hospital advised her to take medication and return in three days. Delayed Admission and Improper Treatment On April 4, Kaur suffered from epileptic fits and later died in the emergency room of GMCH, Sector 32. Her family alleged that the private hospital failed to admit her promptly and provide proper care. They also stated that the hospital refused to provide a letter confirming Kaur’s fitness for an MRI requested by the government hospital. Medical Board Investigation A five-member medical board, headed by Dr. AK Attri, Director of GMCH-32, concluded that the doctors at Landmark Hospital had not properly managed Kaur’s condition. They failed to provide supporting documents indicating that she was advised to be admitted or that she or her caregivers refused admission. Police Complaint A complaint will now be filed with the police for further proceedings. The family alleges that the private hospital sent a seriously ill patient home instead of providing adequate care, leading to her improper treatment and eventual death. Involvement of Other Experts In addition to the medical board members, the investigation included expert advice from Sanjay D’Cruz, Professor PN Gupta, Professor Rohit Jindal, and Associate Professor Ashwini Soni. Hospital’s Response Attempts to obtain comment from the private hospital on the matter were unsuccessful.

A five-member medical board has found a private hospital in Sector 33 guilty of negligence leading to the death of a 74-year-old woman from Mohali in April 2024.

The family alleged that the government hospital had requested an MRI on April 7 but required a written letter from the private hospital in Sector 33, Chandigarh, confirming whether the patient could safely undergo the procedure. The patient Amarjit Kaur, 74, a resident of Sector 63, Mohali, was brought to Landmark Hospital on March 16 after she fell at home. The doctors treated her and asked her to return on April 3. On her follow-up, her condition deteriorated and her sodium level was found to be critically low at 120.

Despite this, the hospital did not admit her, advising her to take medicines and return in three days. On April 4, she suffered from epileptic fits and died 12 days later in the emergency room of GMCH, Sector 32.

The complaint filed with the UT advisor, the director, the State Secretary for Public Health and the Director of Public Health stated that the private hospital had sent a seriously ill patient home with medication instead of providing him with the appropriate care.

When the patient was later admitted to a government hospital, the private hospital failed to provide the required details of a thigh implant. This led to improper treatment and the elderly woman eventually died, the complaint said.

The family alleged that the government hospital had requested an MRI on April 7 but demanded a written letter from the private hospital confirming whether the patient could safely undergo the procedure. The private hospital refused to provide the letter.

After going through the statements of stakeholders in the case, the medical board, headed by Dr AK Attri, Director of GMCH-32, concluded that the doctors at Landmark Hospital had not properly managed the patient’s condition during follow-up.

Besides Dr Attri, Suman Singh, Director of Health Services, Chandigarh, Dr Sushil Mahi, Medical Director, Government Multi Specialty Hospital-Sector 16, Associate Professor Dr Naveen Pandey and Dr Pawan Bansal, President, Indian Medical Association Chandigarh, were also part of the medical council.

In addition, expert advice was provided by Sanjay D’Cruz, in-charge of the medical department of GMCH Sector 32, Prof PN Gupta, Prof Rohit Jindal and Associate Prof Ashwini Soni.

The committee found that the Landmark Hospital doctors had failed to provide the committee with supporting documents indicating that the patient had been advised to be admitted due to low sodium levels or due to refusal of admission by the patient or his caregivers.

Attempts to obtain comment from the private hospital on the developments remained fruitless.
