The chase ended with officers shooting the front tire of the van as the driver attempted to ram them. The incident began around 8am when traffic officers spotted a suspicious-looking van on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away. The chase ensued for 5 kilometers, from the highway to Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas. During the pursuit, the suspect attempted to ram the pursuing officers’ vehicles. In response, officers fired shots into the front tire of the van, causing it to swerve off the road and come to a stop. The suspect was immediately arrested. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the suspect did not possess a valid driver’s license. He also had multiple criminal records and a urine test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in his system. Furthermore, he was wanted in connection with a drugs case in 2023 under section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952. The suspect’s reckless driving during his escape attempt damaged several parked vehicles. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Criminal Code for attempted murder and Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm in a public place.

GEORGE TOWN, July 10 — A high-speed police chase through the streets of Bayan Lepas this morning left a trail of damaged vehicles before police finally arrested a 36-year-old van driver.

The chase ended when officers shot the front tire of the van as the driver tried to ram the pursuing officers.

Southwestern District Police Chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal said a team of traffic officers were conducting an operation along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway around 8am this morning when they spotted a suspicious-looking van.

When the officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away.

This led to a 5-kilometer chase from the highway to Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas.

“The suspect attempted to ram the police officers who were pursuing him, after which shots were fired into the front tire of the van, causing the van to leave the road and come to a stop,” he said in a press release about the incident today.

He said the suspect was immediately arrested and found to be driving without a valid driver’s license.

“He had multiple criminal records and a urine test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in his system,” he said.

He said the suspect was also wanted in connection with a drugs case in 2023, under section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

He added that several vehicles parked on the side of the road were damaged due to the suspect’s reckless driving in his attempt to escape.

“This case will be investigated under Section 307 of the Criminal Code for attempted murder and Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm in a public place,” he said.
