The Tribal Welfare Department has drawn up a plan to identify and implement a training programme for youth from Scheduled Tribe communities who have completed ITI, diploma or degree courses and remain unemployed or underemployed. A door-to-door survey conducted by the teachers of Government Tribal Residential Schools in different districts identified 450 unemployed youth, said G. Laxmi Priya, Secretary, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department.

Of them, 146 were selected for the soft skill training programme in Bengaluru, conducted by Nettur Technical Training Foundation, a panelised institute of Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation. It includes 46 women and 106 men. After completing the three-month training programme in May, the department had arranged placement opportunities for all of them in the field of CRM and CNC in various companies, she said. Chief Minister MK Stalin recently handed over the training completion certificates and offer letters to the beneficiaries.

Speak with The Hindu, K. Poongodi, a beneficiary with a postgraduate degree in Tamil, said, “The CRM training programme was very useful. We were trained in soft skills, how to deal with customers and in spoken English. After the training, I feel more confident in communicating with customers.” Ms. Poongodi, who was underpaid as a farm labourer in Melapappanpadi near Gingee, has received three job offers from financial services and automobile companies.

M. Manikandan, another beneficiary from Jayankondam in Ariyalur district, said, “The training programme was an eye-opener as I got an opportunity to interact and learn from colleagues from different parts of the state.” He was offered a job at an aluminium foundry.

S. Annadurai, Director, Tribal Welfare Department, said that after the success of this pilot project, the department plans to scale up the project by training more unemployed and underemployed youth from the Scheduled Tribes communities.
