The new Quarry Kitchen At The Quarry pool you have an unbeatable view over the park, but what about the food? Review by Amelia Barrett And Will Turner

We are all excited about the new café at The Quarry! Quarry Kitchen is definitely one of the best places in town to sit and while away some time over a delicious brunch or lunch, with unbeatable views over the park. Will Turner and Amelia Barrett sampled the new menus during a work experience placement at My Shrewsbury and gave it a big thumbs up!

Will says…

The Quarry is home to the recently opened ‘Quarry Kitchen’, headed up by renowned Shrewsbury chef Chris Burt. It’s the latest venture from ‘fun experts’ Shropshire Festivals, so we were keen to try out the new offering. Following the ‘soft’ opening last weekend, we visited the café for lunch on a Friday afternoon.

Adjacent to The Quarry swimming pool and not far from the main entrance to the picturesque park, it’s easy to get to and, with ample indoor and outdoor seating, is suitable for all weathers. The decor is light and airy industrial/botanical, with lots of leafy greenery, wood and faux brick wallpaper. It’s a brilliant upgrade and an uplifting place to sit and enjoy a light bite or cuppa in the park.

For those who have just taken a dip in the indoor pool, there is further access from the swimming centre, allowing visitors from all locations easy access to the Café. We entered through the main entrance to the outdoor area, which was easily accessible and designed to allow people of all abilities to enter without obstacles.

With both a physical menu to hand and enlarged menu boards on the back wall, it was clear that there was an exciting variety of choice available. The locally sourced food and drink give a homely feel to the café; it was great to see the large display of attractive Crystal’s Cupcakes, handmade in Shrewsbury!

I ordered an apple juice and a stone baked ‘Carbonara Pizza’, which had all the elements of a warming pasta carbonara made in a pizza shape, with a rich, hearty layer of béchamel sauce, bacon, cheese and an egg carefully placed in the middle. The pizza cost £14, the price to portion ratio was very reasonable, making the experience very enjoyable, with friendly and welcoming staff accompanying the visit. If locally sourced food, picturesque locations and great quality food is your thing, make sure you pop into The Quarry Café for a meal soon.

Amelia says…

Although this colourful new café only opened last week, everything seemed very organised, with enthusiastic and welcoming staff. The menu itself was extremely diverse with brunch options, pizza, Shropshire specials and much more.

Quarry Café also caters to specific customer needs with the option to make all main courses gluten free and offer milk alternatives – this allows a wide range of customer needs to be met. I try to limit gluten where possible due to a skin condition so the gluten free pizzas were perfect for me – the size was great for the price and there was a great range of toppings. Although I only got the Margarita, it was one of the best Margarita pizzas in town.

Tasting dishes from Quarry Kitchen

We all opted for stone-fired pizzas, which were reasonably priced considering the size (£13-£15), but there was also an interesting Munch/Lunch menu with appealing and quirky sounding dishes. These included the ‘Shropshire Hummus Bowl’ with crispy chickpeas, pomegranate molasses, dukkah crunch and toasted sourdough (£9), or the ‘Funguy Panini’ with wild mushrooms, pesto, kale, pumpkin seeds and fun guy marmite (£10 or £12 with chips), or they have a ‘QK Burger’ with Corbetts beef and Wrekin Blue (£15), jacket potatoes, pork pies, sausage rolls and salads of the day. Sides include garlic pizza bread and ‘Umami seasoned chips’, chips and QK salad.

If you get there early, there’s also a great brunch menu. They’re also licensed to sell local beer, lager and cider, and Paso Primero wines, and there’s a great range of teas and soft drinks, including fancy hot chocolate with all the trimmings for cooler weather. If we’re lucky enough to get some sun, there’s a range of Shropshire Ice Cream flavours, and there are plans to open later for pizza nights.
