US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off tonight in CNN’s presidential debate. The debate is the first of the 2024 campaign and comes more than four months before the November election.

According to the Atlanta-based network, June 27 will mark the first showdown between Trump and Biden since 2020, as neither has run in the primaries this campaign. It will also be the first time a sitting president and a former president have debated each other.

It also marks the first time in decades that this debate will not be held by the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has organized presidential debates since 1988.

Viewers can tune in to the “CNN Presidential Debate” Thursday, June 27 at 9 p.m. ET on CNN or simulcast on USA TODAY via YouTube. The debate, hosted by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, will run for 90 minutes with two commercial breaks.

The rules and setting of the debate will be different than in the past. Notably, there will be no live audience on the Atlanta stage and each candidate’s microphone will be cut off when it is not their turn to speak.

Candidates are not allowed to talk to their staff during breaks or bring pre-written notes. They are only given a pen, notepad and water bottle.

No other candidate met all of the criteria CNN had set forth to participate in the presidential debate. These criteria included being on enough state ballots to win the necessary 270 electoral votes and scoring 15% or higher in four different national polls among registered or likely voters.

The second presidential debate is scheduled for Sept. 10 and will be hosted by ABC News, with David Muir and Linsey Davis serving as moderators, the network announced.
