The Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has donated over 40 pick-up trucks to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The donation is intended to improve the mobility and operational efficiency of healthcare professionals across the country.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on July 5, 2024, Dr. Okoe Boye stressed the commitment of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government to improve the health infrastructure.

“We are here this morning to do a very simple but very important ceremony. We are interested in the impact and not in the fanfare, that is why you do not see us with stages and canopies.

“What I want to say is that the Akufo-Addo government is committed to reshaping and reshaping health care in Ghana, and in fact the entire health care system,” he said.

Dr Okoe Boye emphasised the role of the Ghana Health Service in the public health system and said: “This morning we are here to present over 40 collections to one of our most prominent institutions, the Ghana Health Service.

“The Ghana Health Service is the principal agent when it comes to the delivery of health care in the government space, the public space.

“We have hospitals, health centres and CHPS complexes across the country that have to travel on our highways to get medicines. There are times when doctors have to be brought from the district to hospitals to provide assistance.

“District Directors in remote areas need to move to remote areas to ensure that vaccines for children are delivered and that the delivery is also monitored. So this morning, on behalf of Akufo-Addo and the ministry, we presented these 40 pick-ups to the Ghana Health Service to increase the cost of healthcare in the country,” Dr Okoe Boye added.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, expressed his gratitude upon receiving the vehicles.

He assured that the vehicles would be used to expand the institution’s activities and reach.

“Ghana Health Service represents all 261 districts and operates about 8,000 facilities across the country.

“And so this helps us to not only move staff for work, but also to reach out to the community to ensure centers, CHPS grounds and outreach, especially in communities to provide information and services,” he said.

“It will really help us, especially in the remote parts of the country. We will ensure that it goes to the most urgent districts that need vehicles to improve health care at all levels, especially primary education.

This donation marks a historic moment as it is the first time that the Ghana Health Service has received such a large number of vehicles from the Ministry.
