(July 5, 2023) – CHI Health reports a concerning increase in fireworks-related injuries during this year’s Fourth of July celebration. According to the healthcare system, emergency departments in Lincoln and Omaha treated a total of over 36 patients for firework-related injuries. The majority of the injuries involved burns, lacerations, and amputations. “We saw a significant spike in fireworks-related injuries this year compared to previous years,” said Dr. Matthew Esch, medical director of emergency services at CHI Health St. Elizabeth. “Many of these injuries could have been prevented by following proper safety precautions.” Esch emphasized the importance of using fireworks only in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and in designated areas. He also urged people to never point fireworks at others or ignite them indoors. “Fireworks can be fun and exciting, but they can also be dangerous,” Esch said. “It’s important to prioritize safety and use them responsibly to avoid serious injuries.” CHI Health officials remind the public that fireworks are illegal in some areas and that it is crucial to check local laws before using them. They also recommend keeping pets indoors and under supervision on the Fourth of July to prevent them from being injured or frightened by fireworks.
