Diane Abbott to Become ‘Mother of the House’ in ParliamentDiane Abbott to Become ‘Mother of the House’ in Parliament Labour MP Diane Abbott is set to become the “Mother of the House” in Parliament, a title bestowed upon the longest-serving female MP. The Evening Standard reports that Abbott, who has represented Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987, will take on the role following the death of Harriet Harman in July. As “Mother of the House,” Abbott will serve as a mentor and advisor to other MPs, particularly those new to Parliament. The role also involves presiding over debates in the House of Commons when the Speaker and Deputy Speakers are absent. Abbott’s appointment comes at a time when she is facing criticism for her comments on police stop-and-search tactics. However, her supporters say that she is a respected and experienced politician who will bring a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to the role. The title of “Mother of the House” was first used in the 14th century, when it was given to the oldest member of Parliament. Today, the role is held by the longest-serving female MP.
