Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer promised in his victory speech that “change starts now”, while outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat.

Labour swept past the 326 seats needed to win an overall majority in the 650-seat parliament and end 14 years of Conservative-led government. The final result is expected on Friday morning UK time.

An exit poll on Thursday showed Labour on course to win 410 seats, a majority of 170 seats.

Sunak’s Conservatives are expected to suffer historic losses, taking just 131 seats. That would be the lowest number of seats in the House of Commons since 1906.
