Despite Fernandez’s aggressive approach, Wozniacki’s experience prevailed, as she saved two match points to secure a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory. The match started as a serving battle, with both players finding success with their first serves. Wozniacki, however, gained a slight edge in the first set by taking advantage of Fernandez’s 16 unforced errors. In the second set, Fernandez came out firing, leveling the match with a 6-2 victory. The third set was a thrilling battle, with both players holding serve initially. With Fernandez serving at 5-4 and two match points in hand, Wozniacki showed her resilience by forcing a deuce and eventually breaking serve. The Dane then held her own serve and broke Fernandez again in the 11th game to seal the victory. “It was a tough match,” Wozniacki said after the match. “Leylah played really well, and I had to dig deep to win.” Wozniacki, who won the Australian Open in 2018 and was ranked No. 1 in the world for 71 weeks, faces a tough test in the third round against Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion.

Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki (No. 91) returns to the round of 16 at Wimbledon after beating Leylah Fernandez (No. 28) 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In an intergenerational duel more than 12 years apart, Wozniacki saved two match points before securing victory.

Fernandez tried to seize control early and showed a more aggressive game than her rival. Both had similar serving statistics, with Wozniacki winning 71% of the points on her first serve, slightly surpassing the Canadian’s 44% on her second serve.

Breathtaking Wimbledon victory

Both players had missed chances to break. Fernandez came close in the 5th game, with 4 break points in her favor. Unfortunately for the former US Open runner-up, Wozniacki held on and managed to maintain equality.

In the 8th game, the former world number 1 took advantage of a lone chance to gain the advantage and closed the set 6-3 on her serve. Fernandez’s 16 unforced errors proved to be her weakest link, while Wozniacki, less accurate, made a total of 11 unforced errors.

After almost two hours of play, both sides were stuck in a thrilling third set. Wozniacki initially led with a break, but could not hold on to it when Fernandez leveled the match.

Wozniacki complained about the poor light and asked for a match to be suspended, although other matches on the other courts were proceeding normally. Eventually the referee decided to stop play. Due to the forecast of rain the following day, they moved the match to Centre Court after Andy Murray’s retirement. Just over an hour later, they resumed play with a warm-up. wozniackimiami

The match turned in favor of the Dane, who took the break at the right moment and secured victory 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Her next opponent is 2022 champion Elena Rybakina (No. 4), who struggled to beat Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
