The club, determined to enhance its facilities for young footballers, devised a novel fundraising plan—a Helicopter Drop. On a crisp autumn day, GAA luminaries gathered at the club. Among them were Jarlath Burns, the esteemed national chairman, and Donegal’s own Mary Coughlan, the county’s presiding figurehead. Ulster GAA’s Ciaran McLaughlin also graced the occasion. As the excitement grew, the Armagh native Burns purchased a ticket, eager to support the club’s worthy cause. The funds raised would contribute to the construction of floodlights, illuminating the path for junior teams as they honed their skills in the twilight hours. The Helicopter Drop concept was simple yet thrilling. Each ticket purchase secured a designated space on the club field. When the appointed day arrived, five footballs would cascade from the sky, each bearing the potential to land on a lucky winner’s plot. A grand total of 10 prizes awaited the fortunate participants, with a collective value of €35,000. The top prize promised to transform one unsuspecting individual into a €25,000 richer. With the promise of financial rewards and the chance to contribute to the club’s future, tickets swiftly sold out. As the helicopter hovered overhead, the crowd held their breath in anticipation. The first ball plummeted earthward, its trajectory uncertain. Moments later, a joyous roar erupted as it landed squarely on a designated space. The winner, overwhelmed with disbelief, shared in the club’s triumph. The Helicopter Drop proved to be an unmitigated success, not only raising funds for vital infrastructure but also fostering a sense of community spirit and camaraderie within the club. As the floodlights cast their warm glow upon the playing field, Downings GAA could proudly reflect on a chapter in its history marked by innovation, generosity, and the unwavering support of its members.

GAA chairman Jarlath Burns was in attendance at Downings GAA club this week, along with Donegal chairman Mary Coughlan and Ulster GAA chairman Ciaran McLaughlin, when the Armagh native bought his ticket in the club’s draw. The money went towards the club’s floodlights for its junior teams.

In October, the club will drop five footballs from a helicopter. The winner could be €25,000 richer.

The idea of the Helicopter Drop is that everyone who buys a ticket gets a space on our club field. If the ball lands on your space, that person is the winner.

There are a total of 10 prizes to be won with a total value of €35,000.
