Officer Who Killed Tamir Rice Departs New PositionOfficer Who Killed Tamir Rice Departs New Position Timothy Loehmann, the former Cleveland police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, has resigned from his new job as a police officer in Sandusky, Ohio. According to the Sandusky Register, Loehmann submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, without providing a reason for his departure. The city’s mayor, Mike Considine, confirmed that Loehmann’s employment had been terminated. Loehmann’s hiring by the Sandusky Police Department in August 2022 had sparked protests and outrage from community members and activists. They argued that Loehmann’s past actions showed he was unfit to serve as a police officer and that his presence in the community was a threat to its safety. In 2014, Loehmann and his partner, Frank Garmback, responded to a call about a man waving a gun outside a Cleveland recreation center. Arriving on scene, Loehmann saw that the “gun” was a toy and fatally shot Rice within seconds. A grand jury declined to indict Loehmann, but he was eventually fired from the Cleveland Police Department. In 2018, he was charged with manslaughter but ultimately acquitted. Loehmann’s resignation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of his past actions and the circumstances surrounding Rice’s death. Activists had vowed to continue protesting against his presence in Sandusky and had planned a rally outside the city council meeting on Wednesday, January 18. The city of Sandusky has declined to comment further on Loehmann’s departure.
