When Tim Hortons franchise owners Gina and Dave Kron named the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County as the beneficiary of their Smile Cookie sale last year, they exceeded their fundraising goals by establishing a record number of local businesses.

This year the community showed that last year’s success was no coincidence.

Sales of Smile Cookies at local Tim Hortons restaurants in northern Chautauqua County raised $9,181 for the Boys and Girls Club, just beating last year’s record amount. This is the second year in a row that at least $9,000 has been raised for the Boys and Girls Club.

“I thank Gina and Dave, and all of the management team for their dedication and service to the Boys and Girls Club,” said Jeannie Gallaway, executive director of Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County. “They all went above and beyond to promote this campaign. It’s so cool to see how the community has received it.”

The annual Smile Cookie campaign at Tim Hortons in the area had in previous years raised between $1,500 and $2,000 for other charities outside the community, such as Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo. But last year, Gina Kron wanted to shift the focus to a local organization to have a more direct impact on the community most of her customers call home, and the results spoke for themselves.

They donated proceeds from the sale of Smile Cookies to the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County. The check will be held by the club’s executive director, Jeannie Gallaway, with members of the board of directors.

“It’s a testament to how many people really support the Boys & Girls Club and what they do in the community,” said Kron. “It’s really important to have a place for these kids to go… The community really got behind it.”

Gina and Dave Kron run Tim Hortons stores across the county, including Dunkirk, Fredonia, Cassadaga and Westfield. One of their managers, Holly Lanphere, felt the impact of the decision as a parent of two children who attend the Boys and Girls Club. Lanphere helped decorate Smile Cookies with Club members at the campaign’s launch last year and also visited the Club for its annual Christmas party to decorate doughnuts with Club children, including her own. Gallaway noted that several parents of Club children work at one of the locations where Gina and Dave Kron operate.

“We are so pleased with the support we receive from our community every day,” Gina Kron said this after last year’s sales figures. “Being able to give back to our community is really what we stand for. It makes us so happy that we can do that.”

Gallaway also noted that Tim Hortons and the Boys and Girls Club have similar mission statements on a large scale, but locally the faces of the two organizations are just as aligned. Gallaway said she hopes the collaboration with Gina and Dave Kron will continue for many years to come.

“The support from Gina and Dave has been great,” said Gallaway. “Knowing that we have such great people in our community makes you want to work harder, it makes you want to collaborate.”

Proceeds from the Smile Cookie sale will fund summer field trips, just as they did a year ago when the Club visited the Buffalo Science Museum, Urban Air Adventure Park, Explore & More Children’s Museum, the Greystone Nature Preserve and Sunset Bay. Last year’s remaining funds will cover first aid needs, while this year’s remaining funds will go to the Great Futures Scholarship Fund.

The campaign’s success was crucial for the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County because the majority of the club’s grant funds were allocated to programming during the school year, rather than covering transportation costs for out-of-town travel. Strong community support through the Smile Cookie campaign means the club’s children can enjoy a range of trips again this summer.

“By having people in the community who want to support the community, you build,” said Gallaway.

She called the donation a “investment” in the community they all call home. “They choose to invest in us and in our children’s future, and that means everything.”
