Kohli, who played a crucial role in India’s triumph with a match-winning 76, announced his retirement from the format after the final. Kohli departs as India’s second-highest T20I run-scorer, with an impressive average of 48.69 and a remarkable strike rate of 137.04. Tendulkar, who himself retired from international cricket in 2013, praised Kohli’s achievements on social media, stating, “You are a true champion of this sport. Your performance in the final proved why you are one of the greats.” Shortly after Kohli’s announcement, Rohit, who led India to victory as captain, revealed his own decision to retire from T20Is. As the highest scorer in the format, Rohit holds the record for most centuries and is a two-time world champion. “I have witnessed your evolution from a promising youngster to a World Cup-winning captain. Your unwavering dedication and talent have brought pride to the nation,” Tendulkar said in appreciation of Rohit’s achievements. Tendulkar expressed his hope that both Kohli and Rohit would continue to excel in other formats of the game. He praised their contributions to Indian cricket and congratulated them on their successful retirements from T20I cricket.

Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has lauded stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for ending their T20I careers on a high by winning the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup.

Shortly after India won their second T20 World Cup with a seven-run win over South Africa at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Kohli was named Player of the Match for his 76 off 59 balls. He said this was the last T20I of his international career.

Kohli ended his T20I career as India’s second-highest run-scorer in the format, with 4,188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04.

“You are a true champion of this sport. You may have struggled earlier in the tournament, but last night you proved why you are truly one of the greats of the gentleman’s game.

“Participating in six World Cups and achieving victory in the last one is an experience I know well. I hope you continue to win matches for India in the longer formats of the game,” Tendulkar wrote on ‘X’.

Later, Rohit said in the post-match press conference that he is joining Virat to end his T20I career. Rohit, who led India to T20 World Cup glory in Barbados, finishes as the highest scorer in T20Is – 4231 runs in 159 matches – and also holds the record for most centuries in men’s T20Is via fine tons, apart from that he is a two-time world champion in the shortest format.

“I have witnessed firsthand your evolution from a promising youngster to a World Cup-winning captain. Your unwavering dedication and exceptional talent have brought immense pride to the nation. Guiding India to a T20 World Cup victory is the perfect culmination of your great career .Good job, Rohit!” Tendulkar added. (Agency)
