On Tuesday, the New York Times published a list of 22 of the best pizza places in the US, paired with the story on “How America Became the Capital of Great Pizza.”

Amar Pizza at 12195 Jos. Campau Ave. was on the list and was known for using Bengali ingredients on its pizzas.

That use of Bengali ingredients, wrote New York Times Brett Anderson, was “born of necessity.” . “We had to come up with something unique to separate us.”

Amar Pizza was noted by the New York Times for its pizza made with dried fish paste, a condiment and another with Naga chili peppers as an ingredient.

“I am ecstatic, excited and honored,” said Ahmed, reached by phone Tuesday. “All the years of hard work are being recognized. This is big.”

On the online menu, Amar Pizza has a dozen pizza specialties, including the Dry Fish pizza with dried shrimp, roasted garlic, mozzarella and provolone cheese mix, onions and coriander with spicy fish pasta sauce. The Naga pizza is made with chicken, red onions, cilantro and naga sauce. Amar is also home to the Ghost Pepper pizza, which is described as extremely hot, with chicken, red onions, cilantro and ghost sauce. Ahmed said he created the Ghost Pepper pizza when customers wanted a spicier version than the Naga pizza.

The Tandoori Pizza, described on the menu as sweet and spicy, consists of tandoori chicken fillet, cheese, red onions and tandoori sauce.

Thin crust, round and deep dish pizzas are also offered.

Amar Pizza started in 2010 mainly as a takeaway restaurant. According to the website, other menu items offered include burgers, biryanis, sandwiches, subs and salads. There is also a Troy location at 3728 Rochester Road, owned by another family member.
