The 26-year-old forward declined his 2025 player option, becoming a free agent on Sunday. The Knicks’ swift move to retain Anunoby comes on the heels of their acquisition of Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets. Anunoby’s impact on the Knicks cannot be overstated. After joining the team in December, he stepped up as a key player in the Eastern Conference semifinals run. Despite injuries, he averaged 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. The Knicks’ 50-32 record and playoff success last season can largely be attributed to Anunoby’s contributions. With a healthy roster and the addition of Bridges, the team’s future looks bright. They aim to build on their momentum and compete for the NBA championship in the years to come.

The centerpiece of one of last season’s biggest NBA trades appears to be here to stay.

The New York Knicks plan to sign OG Anunoby to a five-year contract worth $212.5 million once free agency opens Sunday, according to a Wednesday afternoon report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Reports surfaced Monday that the 26-year-old Anunoby would decline his 2025 player option and become a free agent. The Knicks’ reported retention of Anunoby comes less than 24 hours after New York finalized a deal to acquire forward Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets.

The Knicks went 50-32 last season – their best record since 2013 – and reached the Eastern Conference semifinals for the second straight year.

Much of the injury-plagued team’s success can be attributed to Anunoby, who took over the team from the Toronto Raptors on December 30.

While battling injuries, the Indiana product averaged 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 2023-2024.
