Oakland on High Alert for ‘Massive’ Earthquake After Unexplained Seismic ActivityOakland on High Alert for ‘Massive’ Earthquake After Unexplained Seismic Activity Oakland, California is bracing for a potential “massive” earthquake after a series of mysterious seismic activities roiled the area in recent days. Since Thursday, January 12th, over 300 earthquakes have been recorded in the East Bay, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 4.5. The seismic activity has centered around the Hayward Fault, a major seismic fault that runs directly through Oakland. Scientists are baffled by the sudden surge in seismic activity, as the Hayward Fault has been relatively quiet in recent years. They speculate that the earthquakes could be a sign of impending seismic stress or a precursor to a larger earthquake. “We are seeing a very rapid sequence of earthquakes,” said Justin Rubinstein, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). “This is not something we have seen on the Hayward Fault before.” The Oakland City Council has declared a state of emergency and has urged residents to prepare for an earthquake, including securing furniture, stocking up on supplies, and making an evacuation plan. “We need to take this seriously,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. “We don’t know when or if a big earthquake will happen, but we need to be ready.” The USGS has issued a “yellow alert” for the East Bay, indicating that there is a “significant” chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 days. This is the highest level of alert the agency can issue. Scientists warn that the earthquake, if it does occur, could cause widespread damage and casualties. Oakland is home to over 400,000 people and is a major economic center for the Bay Area. Residents are advised to follow these safety precautions: * Secure furniture and appliances to walls. * Keep a supply of food, water, and medical supplies on hand. * Have an evacuation plan in place. * Know the location of your nearest emergency shelter. “We cannot predict when or if an earthquake will happen,” said Schaaf. “But we can be prepared for the worst.”
