PAM is a rare, life-threatening infection of the brain caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, which is found in warm, freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, and ponds. The consignment of Miltefosine, an antiparasitic drug, was sent to the Kerala government on Saturday, August 13, 2023, in response to a request from the Indian authorities. The capsules were dispatched from VPS Healthcare’s Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi and arrived in Kerala on Sunday, August 14, 2023. VPS Healthcare is a leading healthcare provider in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and has a strong presence in Kerala, with several hospitals and clinics in the state. The company has been working closely with the Kerala government to provide medical support during the outbreak of PAM. “We are committed to supporting the people of Kerala during this difficult time,” said Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman of VPS Healthcare. “We have sent Miltefosine capsules to help treat patients with PAM, and our team of doctors is on standby to provide any further assistance that may be required.” PAM is a rare but serious infection that can be fatal if not treated promptly. Symptoms of PAM include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, and stiff neck. The infection can progress rapidly, leading to seizures, coma, and death. The Kerala government has declared an outbreak of PAM in the state after five people died from the infection in July 2023. The government has advised people to avoid swimming in freshwater bodies and to boil water before drinking it. Miltefosine is an effective treatment for PAM, and it is hoped that the consignment sent by VPS Healthcare will help to save lives in Kerala.
