Tourists in Bali are invited to attend the Ulun Danu Festival, which will take place from July 20 to August 17, 2024.

The cultural festival takes place in and around the Pura Ulun Danu Beratan temple complex in Bedugul, Tabanan Regency, and is free for tourists to attend.

The Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is one of the most famous and spiritually significant temples in Bali. The temple itself has become a picture of Bali and the festival highlights many of the cultural wonders that make the area so unique.

During the festival, dozens of cultural dances and storytelling performances are performed that are not normally performed every day.

There is hope that the Ulun Danu Beratan Festival will attract more visitors to the Bedugul area.

Ulun Danu Beratan Public Relations Director I Made Sukarata told reporters that cultural performances held during the festival include the gebogan, a dance symbolizing fertility and agricultural abundance.

In terms of agriculture, the Bedugul region is one of the most productive areas of Bali. The tropical highlands provide the most fertile soil for growing coffee, fruit and flowers.

The festival is already attracting more tourists to the temple, with more than 1,300 international tourists visiting daily, along with another 700 or so domestic tourists.

The festival is especially popular among Australian tourists who want to learn more about Balinese culture during their holiday.

The festival also gets more Balinese youth involved in preserving and maintaining local culture. Sukartata said: “The participants in this cultural parade are mainly young people.

The aim of involving young people is to ensure that the culture of a line is not eroded. To maintain this, regeneration is therefore needed.”

Participants come from 18 different villages around the Ulun Danu Beratan area, drawing on the hyper-local wisdom of each community.

As part of the Ulun Danu Festival, cultural performances are held three times a week, starting at 1pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Tourists are welcome to enjoy the festival performances and events without any additional fees. The entrance fee to explore Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is IDR 75,000 for international adults and IDR 50,000 for international children.

The Ulun Danu Festival is celebrated not only at Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, but also at The Blooms Garden. Guests have access to specialized cultural displays and flower-themed events throughout the festival.

The Blooms Garden will also have a series of Georgian parades throughout the month. Blooms Garden Marketing Leader Luh Putu Rice Febrianti told reporters: “The display of cultural attractions of the bogan parade itself is intended to preserve Balinese culture so that it will not be eroded by the progress of time.”

“With the Ulun Danu Festival, we aim to increase tourist visits by 50 percent.” The Gebogan Parade at The Blooms Garden takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m.

The Ulun Danu Festival is an example of how leaders in Bali are committed to promoting cultural tourism on the island.

As tourism development in southern Bali increasingly focuses on night-time entertainment and luxury tourism, leaders believe that cultural tourism in less-visited parts of the island should be more extensively promoted.

Bali Tourism Village Communication Forum chairman Dewi I Made Mendra Astawa spoke to reporters last month about how inviting tourists to attend more cultural festivals, ceremonies, parades and events could be the solution to achieving more culturally respectful and sustainable tourism on the island.

Astawa said: “(We should) take advantage of what we have. We can organize an event in a village with a budget and human resources. When it comes to existing religious and traditional activities, only the promotional side is needed.”
