The incident commander responsible for battling six wildfires in British Columbia’s Slocan Lake region says changing weather conditions in the area are posing a challenge for emergency services.

Jason Lawler, incident commander with an Australian management team that responded to the scene, says what happens in the morning can be very different to what happens in the afternoon on some days.

Lawler says in a video posted online by the BC Wildfire Service that the smoke also makes it difficult to deploy aircraft to provide assistance.

Lawler says he doesn’t expect any improvement in the weather over the next few days “and the weather conditions aren’t great at the moment.”

Mayor Jessica Lunn says the evacuation is surreal, but she is reassured by the support her community is receiving.

“Everyone is very nervous, there is a lot of fear and concern, but I am so encouraged to see the concern in the community, the offers from the wider community to support our fellow Slocanites and those affected by these fires,” she said.

“There are a lot of neighbors who helped each other. So people were well prepared for the actual evacuation order.”
