A 37-year-old woman faces charges of possessing a banned breed of dog, child neglect, and dangerously allowing control of a dog to run loose. Two teenagers, aged 13 and 15, were also arrested on suspicion of dangerously letting a dog run loose and possessing a banned breed of dog. They have since been released. The dog has been confiscated by police and is currently in a kennel. Detective Chief Inspector Emma Cheney emphasized the severity of the incident, stating that it “could have had a tragic ending and resulted in a fatality.” She urged dog owners to take responsibility for their pets and ensure their safety around others. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by irresponsible dog ownership. Owners must be aware of their pets’ behaviors and take appropriate measures to prevent harm to others.

It is reported that the child was in the garden of a neighbouring property, where the pet was also kept.

The dog attacked the child, aggressively jerking their head from side to side and biting their neck, causing severe lacerations. The bleeding was controlled and their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a banned breed of dog, dangerously allowing control of a dog to run loose and child neglect.

Two teenagers, aged 13 and 15, were also arrested on suspicion of dangerously letting a dog run loose and possessing a banned breed of dog. They have since been released from police custody.

The dog has been confiscated and is still in a police kennel.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Cheney said: “This incident could have had a tragic ending and resulted in a fatality.

“We continue to urge people to stop thinking ‘it won’t happen to me’. Owners need to take responsibility, understand their dog and its behaviour and keep everyone safe.”
