A peace lily houseplant is often adorned with beautiful white inflorescences when purchased in a supermarket or garden center. However, after you bring it home, the flowers inevitably turn brown and wither, leaving only green foliage.

Petar Ivanov, garden and plant expert at Fantastic Gardener, has shared some tips on how to get your peace lily to bloom again and again all year round, the Express reports.

“Like any other plant, a peace lily can benefit from a little boost in flowering,” Petar says.

He noted that one of the most common problems with this houseplant is that the plant does not flower.

Petar suggested, “Give him banana peels as fertilizer; this is the best kitchen waste to make a peace lily flourish.”

However, he also mentioned that other kitchen scraps can be just as effective. “There are other (kitchen scraps) that you can substitute (banana) with. The key is that the ingredient is high in potassium, which is the nutrient that stimulates flowering.

“Eggshells are an excellent substitute for banana peel water because they enrich the plant’s soil with calcium, an essential nutrient for plant growth.”

He continues: “You can also add coffee grounds to it. They contain nitrogen and phosphorus, which are also good for healthy plant growth.”
