Agra An accidental shot from a sub-inspector’s pistol killed a Special Operation Group (SOG) officer in Aligarh on Wednesday night. The SI was in the process of cocking the pistol when it went off. The bullet hit the officer in the head and he was declared dead at the hospital.

The sub-inspector was also injured when the stray bullet first pierced his stomach before hitting the constable in the head. Doctors said SI Rajeev Kumar had suffered multiple perforated wounds in the intestines and was in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

Giving further details, Aligarh SSP Sanjeev Suman said that a joint team has been formed to arrest the suspect in the cow slaughter that took place on the intervening night of July 8 and 9.
“The police received an intimation on Wednesday evening that the suspects were active again and a joint team of police officers from Gandhi Park, Ghabhana police stations in Aligarh and SOG was constituted and went on a raid to arrest the suspects,” he said.

“SI Mazhar Hasan’s pistol was locked and when he could not unlock it, another sub-inspector in the team Rajeev Kumar tried. In the process, the pistol went off and a bullet pierced Rajeev Kumar’s stomach and then hit constable Yakub (of SOG) in the head,” he said.
“Constable Yakub was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead by doctors. Rajeev Kumar was also taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery,” the SSP said.
On Thursday evening, Aligarh city police chief (SP) Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said that doctors treating Rajeev Kumar had said that surgery had been performed but he was in critical condition due to multiple perforated wounds in the intestines.

“The remains of Yakub, the deceased police officer, were handed over to the family members with all due respect and decency,” Pathak said.
