Kolkata: The Bidhannagar police have launched a drive to re-impose the ban on sale of cigarettes, gutka and other tobacco products within 90 metres of educational institutions in Salt Lake Sector V. The authorities have been pasting notices (dated July 5) on all stationery and other shops in Sector V since last week, stating that sale of cigarettes, biri, zarda, khaini, gutka or other tobacco products within 90 metres of educational institutions is prohibited and that violation will attract penal action. “The notice was always there. We are only reminding vendors not to violate the norms,” a senior Bidhannagar city police officer said. Rabindranath Biswas, who has been running a shop near IEM since 1988, said the police came last week and warned him against selling tobacco products. But as he ignored it, goods worth lakhs were seized, he said. “But I sell cigarettes and other tobacco products after the university closes for the day,” Biswas said.
