‘Twisters’ Projections: A Box Office Battle‘Twisters’ Projections: A Box Office Battle This weekend’s highly anticipated release, ‘Twisters,’ is set to face a competitive box office landscape. The film, a reboot of the 1996 classic, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, who are seen as potential rising stars in Hollywood. However, the projected opening weekend numbers vary widely, with analysts suggesting anywhere from $40 million to $75 million. Some factors influencing these projections include the popularity of the original film, the allure of tornadoes as a cinematic spectacle, and the star power of Edgar-Jones and Powell. Powell, in particular, is being touted as the next big star, having appeared in box office successes like ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ However, his solo star power remains untested, and it remains to be seen whether he can translate his previous success into a strong opening for ‘Twisters.’ The film’s second star, Edgar-Jones, is less established but has been praised for her performances in films like ‘Normal People.’ The combination of her talent and the star power of Powell may boost the film’s box office chances. Despite the uncertain projections, early reports indicate strong interest in ‘Twisters.’ Paid preview screenings have reportedly sold out, suggesting that audiences are eager to see the film. As such, it’s likely that the film will open in first place, with $50 million being a reasonable estimate. In second place, ‘Despicable Me 4’ is expected to earn a solid $25 million. The animated franchise continues to be a popular draw, and the fourth installment is likely to maintain the momentum. The battle for third place could be close. ‘Inside Out 2,’ the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2015 film, is likely to attract strong box office numbers. However, ‘Longlegs,’ last weekend’s horror breakout, may have staying power, making it a potential challenger for the spot. Overall, the box office competition this weekend will be intense, with ‘Twisters’ leading the charge. The film’s performance will be closely watched as Hollywood assesses the star power of its lead actors and the viability of the tornado-disaster genre.

This weekend will be released Whirlwindsa film that attempts to continue the legacy of the 1996 classic with new stars and cutting-edge VFX, and is Universal’s next big hope for a franchise. However, stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are an unproven commodity at the box office, and no one seems certain what kind of opening it will have. Either way, it’s set to open in first place, but box office analysts are having a field day. I’ve read reports covering a pretty wide range, with some critics predicting it won’t open above $40 million, while others, like the usually reliable BoxOfficePro, expect it to gross in the $60-75 million range (an unusually wide spread for them).

The film’s big selling point, apart from the tornadoes, is its second star, Glen Powell, who positions Hollywood as the next big star. While Powell is charming and popular, his biggest hit remains Top Gun: Maverickwhat a real Tom Cruise movie it was. Everyone but you did well, but over time it initially opened poorly. While he could eventually become a movie star, he is not a guaranteed box office buy – yet – and it will be interesting to see how his career develops. Hollywood often tips leading men for stardom, but it doesn’t always work out. Think back to 2005-2006 when Josh Lucas, fresh from Sweet Home Alabamawas the leader in to sneak And Poseidon? Or Jai Courtenay’s run? Or Armie Hammer? There’s no shade on any of these guys, but ultimately it’s the audience, not the executives, who decides who’s a star.

That being said, I expect Whirlwinds to open reasonably well, as one of our writers, EJ Tangonan, told me he was turned away from a paid preview screening last night because it was sold out, which is a good sign. I expect it to make around $50 million, with the chance that it could get some additional business if Deadpool and Wolverine takes over the box office next weekend. I saw it earlier this week and generally liked it.

Second place is pretty much a no-brainer, with Despicable Me 4 on track to earn $25 million, but third place will be a nail-biter. Everyone will be watching to see if last weekend’s horror outbreak, Long legs(long) legs at the checkout or Inside Out 2 will be able to catch up. I think the latter will happen, but not by a huge margin.

Check out my predictions below:

  1. Twisters: $50 million
  2. Despicable Me 4: $25 Million
  3. Inside Out 2: $12 million
  4. Longlegs: $10 million
  5. A Quiet Place: Day One: $7 Million
