WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives will set up a bipartisan task force next week to investigate the attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a weekend rally, House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Wednesday (July 17).

Members of the House and Senate are preparing for separate briefings with top officials from the U.S. Secret Service and FBI, including FBI Director Christopher Wray. The shooting left Trump wounded in the ear, killed a rallygoer, wounded two others and has raised concerns about a failure by the U.S. Secret Service.

“The reason we’re going to do it that way is because it’s a more precise strike. It’s faster, there aren’t a lot of procedural hurdles, and we also have subpoena authority for that task force,” the top Republican in Congress told Fox News.

“The commission will be made up of Republicans and Democrats who will quickly get to the bottom of this matter so the American people get the answers they deserve,” he said.
