The South African actress told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, July 14, that she and Anya Taylor-Joy, 28, wanted to share their personal experiences playing Furiosa, but that time constraints made it difficult.

“We keep running into each other and in places where we don’t have time to really talk, so we’re constantly like, ‘Oh my god, okay, let’s get together!’ And then life takes over. But it will happen when it’s right,” Theron told the outlet.

The Atomic Blonde star also hinted that if given the chance to connect, they could possibly make a comedy out of their shared experiences playing Furiosa.

Regardless, Theron had immense respect for her character’s torchbearer, Taylor-Joy, and clarified that she wasn’t upset that “one of the best… actresses” would be taking on the role she originally played, according to a 2022 THR report.

Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy understood the responsibility to do Furiosa justice and strove to uphold the standards set by her senior, Theron. The star said she felt “fiercely protective” of the character.

Director George Miller had originally planned to cast Charlize Theron to play the younger version of Furiosa in the prequel, relying on de-aging VFX technology, but later opted for a younger actor.

Miller, who created the Mad Max franchise in 1979, was keen to explore the origin stories of two central characters after the tremendous reception of Fury Road: Imperator Furiosa and Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky, aka Mad Max.

Now, with the release of Furiosa in 2024, the Mad Max franchise is gearing up for a new prequel, The Wasteland, which will follow the origin story of Max Rockatansky.
