Barcelona have confirmed that former midfielder Thiago Alcantara will spend time at the club to learn from new manager Hansi Flick.
The former Spain international confirmed his retirement from playing in July following an injury-plagued spell at Liverpool, having previously starred for Barcelona and Bayern Munich before making his first and only foray into the Premier League.
It was quickly reported that Thiago was being targeted by the Catalan giants for a coaching role and the club have now confirmed that he will be part of Flick’s coaching staff for the summer as he trains to become a coach.
A statement said: “After recently retiring from playing at the age of 33, Thiago Alcantara will join Hansi Flick’s coaching staff in the coming weeks. The former player is expected to remain with the men’s first-team squad throughout the summer and will therefore tour the US.
“The midfielder arrived via La Masia and he and the new Blaugrana coach developed a close bond during the one season they both played at Bayern Munich, when they won the treble.”
