The rockets are primarily intended for use as armament for the Tiger combat helicopter, which can fire them from a launch pod. These training rockets allow combat helicopter crews to engage in realistic training scenarios. They are designed for use against infantry targets, positions, and unprotected or lightly armored vehicles. July 17, 2024 – Rheinmetall has concluded a framework contract with the Bundeswehr for the delivery of 70mm training rockets. The German Armed Forces are looking to purchase rockets with a potential order value of more than €100 million. An initial order worth a mid-double-digit million euro amount was booked in the second quarter of 2024. Delivery of the pilot lot is scheduled for 2024. After acceptance of delivery, series production will start between 2025 and 2029. Rheinmetall is working with the Belgian subsidiary FZ of the Thales Group on the development, qualification and production of the unguided 70mm rockets. The rockets will also be used as armament for the Tiger combat helicopter. The helicopter can fire the unguided rockets from a launch pod for possible engagements against infantry targets, positions or unprotected and lightly armored vehicles. The training missiles now ordered enable combat helicopter crews to operate in realistic training scenarios. Once again, the new orders underline Rheinmetall’s leading technological position for munitions development and production in Europe.
