The clinic employs various behavioral therapies to address gambling disorders, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and self-help. These methods have proven effective in treating a range of mental health issues, including addiction. The government’s efforts to combat online gambling also include a newsletter delivered three times a week. With online gambling growing exponentially in Indonesia and contributing to an increase in suicides and heinous crimes, the government wants to tackle this problem with preventive measures. For example, a rehabilitation center was recently opened in Bogor, West Java.

The clinic is part of the Marzoeki Mahdi psychiatric hospital, which is supervised by the Ministry of Health. The clinic offers 28-day inpatient treatment for people with gambling disorders, as well as outpatient therapy.

The hospital’s director, Nova Riyanti Yusuf, said outpatient treatment is recommended for gambling addicts who can still function at work or in social activities.

“But patients who have difficulty performing daily tasks, are struggling with increasing debt, have severe anxiety or are involved in criminal activity should receive clinical care,” Nova said at the clinic’s opening on July 10.

She explained that the clinic would implement several types of behavioral therapies for people with gambling disorders, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and self-help.

These methods have been shown to be effective for a wide range of mental health problems, including addiction.
