Senator Marshall Secures Audit of USPS to Address Kansas City Area Mail Delivery Delays

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-KS), today announced that he has secured an audit by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (OIG) to address ongoing mail delivery delays in the Kansas City area. “Kansans in the Kansas City area have been facing unacceptable mail delivery delays for far too long. USPS must get to the bottom of these ongoing issues and take immediate steps to improve service,” said Senator Marshall. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I’m pleased to have secured an audit that will provide much-needed answers and oversight.” Senator Marshall’s request for the OIG audit was included in the Senate Appropriations Committee report accompanying the Fiscal Year 2023 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill. The report directs the OIG to conduct a comprehensive review of mail delivery operations, staffing, and financial management at the Kansas City Processing and Distribution Center. The audit will examine several key areas, including: * The causes of the mail delivery delays in the Kansas City area * The steps USPS is taking to address the delays * The adequacy of USPS staffing levels * The efficiency of USPS operations * The effectiveness of USPS financial management The OIG is expected to complete the audit within 12 months and provide its findings and recommendations to Congress. Senator Marshall will closely monitor the progress of the audit and work to ensure that USPS takes swift action to address the concerns raised by Kansans. “Postal delays have a real impact on the lives of Kansans. People rely on the Postal Service to deliver their bills, medications, and other important items. We must get to the bottom of these delivery delays and ensure our constituents are receiving the mail they rely on,” said Senator Marshall. “I am grateful to the Postal Inspector General for agreeing to conduct a comprehensive review and provide recommendations to address these issues.” The audit will review the Kansas City-area USPS operations, including staffing levels, delivery routes, and processing procedures. The Inspector General will then make recommendations to improve mail delivery performance. “Mail delays have a significant impact on our lives,” continued Senator Marshall. “From bills and checks to medications and legal documents, timely mail delivery is essential. I will continue to work with the USPS to resolve these issues and ensure Kansans have the reliable mail service they deserve.” In addition to the audit, Senator Marshall is working on legislation to address mail delivery delays nationwide. The Postal Service Reform Act would provide USPS with greater flexibility and authority to improve its operations and better serve customers. ###
