July 15, 2024 AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Jason Buechel, CEO of Whole Foods Market BB #:147784, joined 70 team members today to ring the opening bell at Nasdaq to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first flagship store in New York City.

The opening of the flagship store in Columbus Circle in 2004 marked a major step in the company’s expansion into New York, transforming the city’s grocery offering with high-quality natural and organic products into the largest supermarket the city had ever had.

Since then, Whole Foods Market has grown to 17 locations and more than 5,000 local team members in the New York City area.

“The opening of the Whole Foods Market Columbus Circle store was, in my opinion, one of the most important openings in the history of our company,” said Christina Minardi, Executive Vice President of Growth & Development for Whole Foods Market & Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores. “It had a tremendous impact on our future growth, and the excitement I felt at that opening is exactly what I feel with our team members today.”

“Today, we not only reflect on our impact in New York City over the past two decades, we also look forward to an exciting future of continued growth in a city that has embraced Whole Foods Market with such enthusiasm,” said Jason Buechel, CEO of Whole Foods Market. “It made perfect sense for us to launch a new store format here. Whole Foods Market Daily Shop will bring our high-quality natural and organic foods to even more New York City customers in a convenient way.”

The first Whole Foods Market Daily Shop location will open this fall on the Upper East Side at 1175 Third Avenue.

The company also announced today the second future location for the Whole Foods Market Daily Shop format, at 301 West 50th Street, in Hell’s Kitchen. An additional location in New York City and a national rollout will follow.

Whole Foods Market Daily Shop stores will offer a variety of fresh, seasonal produce, prepared meals and grocery essentials. Both recently announced New York City locations will also feature Juice & Java, a location offering coffee, tea, fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies, sandwiches, soups and desserts.

The innovative, smaller store format will range from 7,000 to 14,000 square feet, or about one-quarter to one-half the space of a typical 40,000-square-foot store. It is designed to bring the freshest, highest-quality ingredients to customers with a convenience that fits their fast-paced urban lifestyles. Serving more customers through this smaller store format is part of Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores effort to create a best-in-class shopping experience that meets the diverse needs of customers.

Whole Foods Market currently has more than 530 stores in the US, UK and Canada, with more than 75 stores in development.
