How the Trump assassination attempt unfolded

Footage of the shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday shows the suspect clearly had the former president in his sights, even though he was outside the rally’s security fence.

Former President Trump was speaking at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania when shots rang out. Several people at the rally were filming at the time. The FBI has said the shots were fired by a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, which is about an hour’s drive from the rally. Trump had been on stage for just over six minutes, speaking about illegal immigration, when the first sound of gunfire was heard. Two bursts of gunfire were heard. First three shots, then five shots. Three seconds after the first shot was fired, Secret Service agents surrounded him and tried to chase him off the stage. They were followed by other law enforcement officers who were more heavily armed. Trump briefly told them to stop until he could get his shoes. Let me get my shoes. Let me get my shoes. Sir, I got you, sir. Let me get my shoes on. As he stood up, blood was visible on his right ear. He pauses again before being escorted off the stage and raises his fist in the air, as if saying the word fight. The former president was standing on stage at this location. Shortly after the first gunfire was heard, video captured what appears to be the suspected shooter dead on the roof of this building. The building is the closest to the rally that was not within the security perimeter and is approximately 400 feet north of where Trump is standing. The location of the body is consistent with the likely shooting position. This is because the injury to Trump’s ear, which is facing northwest, is consistent with gunfire from that location. An audio analysis of the shots by an acoustics expert at Montana State University found that the gunfire reached the stage from about the same distance as the location of the body. A Secret Service spokesman also said the suspected shooter fired from an elevated position and was killed. Video filmed at the rally showed a police sniper standing on a rooftop about 400 feet from the suspected gunman and aiming in the general direction of the shooter before Trump was shot. Footage shot after the shooting showed a spectator bleeding from a head wound in the bleachers north of where Trump was standing. The Secret Service said one person was killed and two others were seriously wounded at the rally. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination.
