A few years ago, the Oliphant family, who run the hotel, doubled the number of bedrooms and added an extension with a new restaurant, kitchen and bar. Although the hotel has a modern new look, it has been a business on the island for 150 years.

Peter Irvine’s book Scotland the Best calls it a ‘haven’ and says: “Julie and Kevin Oliphant and their daughter Laura continue to win accolades for their exemplary island hotel and restaurant. A fixture for 150 years, under the careful and conscientious ownership of the Oliphants for the past 60.

“For visitors and locals alike, the inn is a haven. The conservatory restaurant overlooks the bay and village; the carefully tended garden looks out across the Mull.” While others have said it is a ‘perfect rural retreat’.

The menu features fresh fish, either caught on the Isle or Mull. In particular, the lobster, langoustine, squat lobster and crab are all caught on Coll’s creels, while the scallops are hand-dived from Mull and the smoked fish comes from the Tobermory Fish Company.

It is the fresh fish and simple cooking style that have earned the hotel’s restaurant rave reviews, including an AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence.

The restaurant overlooks the village of Arinagour, the bay and the islands beyond. The bar offers a range of Scottish gins, whisky, beer, wine and soft drinks. There is a garden to enjoy a drink and enjoy the good weather, along with the great views.
